Namibia provides free sanitary pads in push to cut dropout rate among schoolgirls

pads12 Oct, WINDHOEK – The Namibian education ministry on Wednesday launch a project to provide free sanitary pads to disadvantaged schoolgirls to cut their dropout rate.

Education minister Katrina Hans-Himarwa inaugurated the project, which will benefit more than 5,000 girls from low-income households every month, at an event marking the International Day of the Girl Child.
The struggle to afford sanitary protection was a reality among low- income families, Hans-Himarwa said, adding that studies had shown that if a girl is provided with sanitary towels, her chances of staying in school are 30 percent to 50 percent higher.
“Although not widely reported, this problem can impact negatively on a girl’s confidence and concentration levels at school and even drop out all together,” she said.
Education ministry statistics show that in 2011-2012, over 2,2000 children dropped out of school, with the highest number being that of girls from rural regions as a result of long distances to schools, illnesses, pregnancies and disabilities.
