6 May, Banke : A married woman, Ruksara Kuraisi, who was found hung in her rented apartment in Kailali five days ago, was murdered over dowry, claimed the victim’s father.

“I talked with my daughter over the phone before her murder. She did not talk well then,” said the victim’s father Islam Mohammad Kuraisi. Ruksara had not had rice for the past two days due to torture over dowry by the in-laws, said the victim’s family.

Ruksara, who got married to Sahebe Alam Kuraisi from India some nine months ago, was living with her family in a rented apartment in Kailali. She was found hung in her rented apartment on Thursday.

They (in-laws of Ruksara) had reportedly been putting pressure on her father to provide them dowry, and he had made his mind to provide them Rs 300,000 in cash and a motorcycle. “Over the phone, I told her (Ruksara) that I would come to Kailali tomorrow to discuss the matter. I would manage dowry as demanded by selling off my land. Do not pick any argument in this regard,” said the father of his talks with Ruksara just one hour before her murder.

But, he was informed that she committed suicide upon ringing her some time later, he added. “They (daughter and son-in-law) lived in a low-ceiling apartment. The room is not suited for committing suicide. On top of that, how could she commit suicide while all her family was in the house? She must have been strangled to death,” he said.
