Kathmandu is a renowned tourist hotspot. The initiative, led by the Thamel Tourism Development Council in collaboration with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Ranipokhari, aims to enhance the area’s cleanliness, aesthetics, safety, and organization while reinforcing peace and security.

Bhabishwor Sharma, the Council Chairperson, highlighted the ongoing installation of 80 CCTV cameras across prominent streets such as Lainchour Marg, Chhetrapati Marg, Nursing Chowk Marg, Chaksibari Marg, Satghumti Marg, JP Line Marg, and Paryatan Marg within the Thamel vicinity. Moreover, plans are underway to set up a total of 112 cameras, including four larger ones.

The decision to install CCTV cameras followed a joint study conducted by representatives from Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Kathmandu Valley Police Office, and the Thamel Tourism Development Council to assess the required surveillance infrastructure in the area.

Sahadev Dhamala, the Council Vice-Chair, emphasized the role of these cameras in curbing criminal activities within Thamel, a move supported by more than 2,000 landlords and business owners associated with the Council established in 2047 BS for the holistic development of Thamel.
