6 May, Salleri (Solukhumbu)- Min Bahadur Sherchan, 86, who was on the expedition to the Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, with a dream of again becoming the oldest man to scale the summit passed away on the Everest base camp late this evening.
He breathed his last on the Everest base camp at 17: 14 pm today, confirmed government liaison officer Gyanendra Shrestha. He might have died from a cardiac arrest, it is said.
His mortal body will be brought to Lukla tomorrow and then taken to Kathmandu for final tribute. Sherchan, a resident from Myagdi had successfully scaled the Everest in 2008, becoming the ever-oldest man to reach atop the peak at 76. It took him 340 days to complete his mission. He had won the title of the oldest man to scale the world’s highest peak until 80-year-old Japanese mountaineer Yuchiro Miura broke his record in 2013.
On last April 16, he had set out for the Everest expedition organised by Summit Nepal Trekking Agency. Others six members were in his team. He had made two such attempts back in 2013 and 2015. Before leaving for his (unsuccessful) journey, he said this time he was fully determined to reaching atop Mt Everest safely.
Various organisations abroad including the Non Resident Nepal Association, UK, the Thakali Society UK and Magar Society UK financially assisted him in his mission to scale the Mt Everest this time around.
