17  Feb, KABUL  – At least 53 people including one civilian, one security personnel and 51 militants have been killed in Afghanistan over the past 24 hours as government forces increased pressure on militants, officials said Saturday.

The government forces’ fighting aircrafts struck a Taliban hideout in Kohna Bazaar area of Dasht-e-Qala district of the northern Takhar province on Saturday killing six militants and injuring five others, local police officer Mohammad Nadir told Xinhua.

Similarly the government forces fighting aircrafts targeted Taliban gathering outside Uruzgan provincial capital Tirin Kot city Friday night killing 22 militants and injuring 16 others, security official Zainullah said Saturday.

Moreover, army spokesman in the northern region, Mohammad Hanif Rezai claimed that attacks from grounds and air on the Taliban positions in Sayad district of the northern Sari Pul province left 23 militants dead and injured 26 others.

Taliban outfit has yet to make comment on the claims made by the officials.

However, police said the armed militants’ attack in the southern Kandahar province claimed the life of a police officer on Saturday.

According to police, a mine planted by militants went off in Ghazni city, capital of eastern Ghazni province, claimed the life of one civilian and wounded three others on Saturday.  Enditem
