2 Jan, BANGKOK : (Xinhua) — The Thai capital of Bangkok Friday ordered temporary closure of the city’s venues including schools, stadiums and amusement parks as the COVID-19 outbreak continued to spread.
The restrictive measures, effective from Saturday, aimed at stemming the further spread of COVID-19, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) spokesman Pongsakorn Kwanmuang said.
All BMA schools will be closed during the Jan. 4-17 period, while other venues will be closed till further notice, according to the BMA.
Restaurants throughout the city are required to open only for take-out orders and no seating will be provided for customers.
The BMA also declared three of the city’s districts, namely Bang Khun Thian, Nong Khaem and Bang Phlat, as areas under maximum control following reports of local infections.
Thailand on Friday reported 279 new COVID-19 cases, a majority of which being local infections, and two new deaths.
The new outbreak, first detected in Samut Sakhon near Bangkok, has spread to more than two-thirds of the country’s provinces and regions, and taken the number of its total confirmed cases to 7,163 from less than 4,300 in mid-December.
