25 Jan, Lalitpur – Former foreign affairs minister have laid emphasis on keeping the national interests at the front while making our foreign policy. National interests and concerns should be forwarded to ensure a robust foreign policy, the suggested.
During a programme on ‘Nepal’s foreign policy in the present context’ organised in Lalitpur, former foreign affairs ministers and others pointed out the need for making our foreign policy equally stronger compared to other countries.
Former foreign affairs minister Dr Prakash Chandra Lohani said that the nation could move towards development only if its politics, cultures, economic status and security concerns were considered.
We were obliged to tolerate though Indian imposed blockade on Nepal thrice. The policymakers here failed to develop their capacity to question Indian side about the reason behind the economic blockade, Dr Lohani said.
Likewise, former foreign affairs minister Mahendra Bahadur Pandey viewed that the Panchasheel principle should be considered a benchmark to make our foreign policy stronger. “A better foreign policy gets prepared if time and changeability is considered. There will be no problem if foreign policy is prepared by holding consultations with Nepal’s different foreign affairs experts,” Pandey added.
Similarly, another former foreign affairs minister Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat seconded the views of Dr Lohani and Pandey stating that national interests and necessities should be the priorities in determining Nepal’s foreign policy.
During the programme, foreign affairs experts Dr Shambhuram Simkhada and Hemanta Kharel argued the need for forwarding the internal political consensus while drafting our foreign policy adding that promoting Nepal’s cultures and tourism was equally important in our foreign policy formulation.
