10 Jan,Kathmandu : The Development Committee under the Legislature-Parliament has instructed the government to further expand the Small Town Drinking Water and Sanitation Sector Project.
Some 600 thousand people were benefited from the first-phase implementation of the Project that covered 29 small towns.
It was implemented with the loan assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Following the successful implementation of the first-round of the Project, the ADB has agreed to provide grant assistance to implement the Project in other 21 small towns which is expected to benefit 360,000 more people.
Meanwhile, at the meeting, Minister of State for Water Supply and Sanitation Deepak Khadka spoke of the need of support from all quarters including from consumers for the sustainability of quality drinking water supply projects. “Fifteen percent people are still deprived of basic drinking water services and the government is committed to providing such services to all by 2017 AD,” he said.
Secretary (Ministry of Water Supply and Sanitation) Bheem Prasad Upadhyay informed the meeting that the government had provided Rs 3.2 million for the implementation of small drinking water projects.
Lawmakers present at the meeting drew the attention of the government towards guaranteeing people’s right to pure drinking water which the constitution has recongised as the fundamental right of the citizens. People in urban area lack access to pure drinking water while the hilly people are crying for basic drinking water facilities, they said. RSS
