Journalism should not quit base of truth: Information Minister

18 Feb, Kathmandu- Minister for Information and Communications Surendra Kumar Karki has said that the journalism should not quit the base of truth.

Addressing a programme organized on the 56th anniversary of Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS) today, Minister Karki opined that sensational news makes none immortal. He added that the relevance of RSS and other state-owned media exists as they can continuously disseminate contents on positive themes.
Suggesting the journalists to bring the news of margin and villages, Minister Karki said that the journalism should not be detached from the ground of objectivity.
Minister Karki also expressed his confidence that credible journalism can play role for developing critical society and politics based on meritocracy and good deeds. Stating that protecting public enterprises was challenging, Karki directed the RSS to offer due responsibility to the better performers by utilizing its capital.
Likewise, lawmaker Ramchandra Pokharel suggested the RSS management to unveil policy and programmes for bringing in more budget and offer training in the international institutions to its staffers. Pokharel is also the former staffer of RSS.
Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS) Chairman Kul Chandra Wagle said RSS would expand and modernise its services while balancing relations between the government, people and subscribers.
He said RSS could sustain on a few portion of the budget worth millions of rupees given to various sectors of the government that remains unused. He also stressed the need for discouraging the tendency of using RSS’s news without disclosing the source.
Saying RSS is university and the foundation of Nepali journalism, President of Press Council Nepal Borna Bahadur Karki underscored the need for the only state-owned news agency to make itself additional competitive in the context that there is no other news agency of this kind on the ground for competition.
RSS Board of Directors Member Gangadhar Parajuli said the RSS could be transformed by changing its style of news presentation and making it self-dependent.
RSS Deputy General Manager Surendra Bahadur Nepali said the RSS has still a lot to do in the field of information and continued education, and that the agency should be proactive in exercising the copyright and intellectual property rights.
President of Federation of Nepali Journalists, RSS Chapter Bishnu Nepal, President of Nepal National Employees Association, RSS Prem Prasad Upadhyay, President of RSS Employees Association Manoj Kumar Lamichhane and President of RSS Employees Union Kalika Khadka called for improving the quality of RSS services, while drawing attention of the management towards ensuring the rights and well-being of the journalists and employees.
Founded on Falgun 7, 2018, RSS currently has a total of 198 subscribers across the country.
