Vice President underscores Govt-private sector partnership for energy sector

Kathmandu,  Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun has asserted that forging partnership between government and private sector was essential to develop and promote the energy sector of the country.
Inaugurating the second Himalayan Hydro Expo here today, Vice-President Pun pointed out the need to reforms at policy level and make the energy policy relevant to the changing times.
Stating that the era of electricity outage in the country had come to an end, Pun affirmed that the country had entered a new and bright age for the energy.
He was of the view that it was time to adopt innovative ideas in the energy sector which, he believed, would contribute towards ending the trade deficit due to import of electricity from India.
The VP explained, “Since import of electricity from India is increasing, it would contribute to trade deficit. It’s imperative to increase investment in the energy sector to curb the trade deficit. We all should also consider reducing the import of petroleum product for the same.”
Underlining the promotion of electric vehicle, he urged the government to focus its policies and programmes on the same.
Furthermore, he viewed the need of installing electronic home appliances especially the cooking stove to reduce the import of LPG gas cylinders.
VP Pun voiced to encourage the tendency to enable convenient environment for the works to be done swiftly and lauded the government and private sectors that were working in the same direction.
On the occasion, FNCCI Vice-President Shekhar Golchha argued that prosperity would be only achieved in energy sector through the partnership between government and public. He urged the government put in place the private sector-friendly rules and laws and to implement them pragmatically.
Similarly, Confederation of Nepalese Industries President of Hari Bhakta Sharma spoke of the need to formulate clear legal ground and investment-friendly policies to attract national and international investment in energy sector.
On the occasion, VP Pun honoured Nepal Electricity Authority’s Executive Director Kul Man Ghising for his significant contribution in the energy sector of the country.
More than 85 exhibitors have booked over 100 stalls in the Expo. Touted to be biggest expo in the hydropower sector, more than 100,000 visitors were expected to visit the Expo.
International companies related to hydropower companies from countries as India, China, South Korea, Sweden, Germany, Bulgaria, Bangladesh and the UK among others are also participating in the expo where equipments, tools and other materials related to hydro power company were put at display.
Moreover, modern solar system, electronic vehicle, hydro mechanical among others modern tools will remain highlights of the event, shared Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN) President Shailendra Guragain.
