19 Dec,Kathmandu: The Joint Students Front has today drawn the attention of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to retract the constitution amendment proposal, arguing that it was not in the nation’s interest.
The Front drew the PM’s attention through a memorandum that was submitted to the PM’s chief political advisor. Some of the letters addressed to the PM calling for withdrawing the proposal that were written by students across the country have also been handed over.
Chairperson of All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), Nabina Lama called for seeking an alternative through consensus among the parties by forthwith withdrawing the proposal brought by the government as the opposition parties in parliament including the main opposition CPN (UML) and the Madhesi Front were disagreed to it.
Niraj Labaju, president of the student union close to Nepal Workers and Peasants Party, said the provisions in the amendment proposal allowing the naturalized citizen to be appointed to the leadership positions in the key state organs and declaring Hindi as the national language were anti-national. He demanded their immediate withdrawal.
The students unions affiliated to the CPN (UML), CPN (ML), Rastriya Janamorcha and NWPP among other parties have been conducting protest programmes against the amendment proposal.
After accepting the memorandum, PM’s chief political advisor Chakrapani Khanal pledged to submit the memo to the Prime Minister, urging the protesting students unions to understand the reality about the amendment proposal’s significance for the implementation of the constitution which has been achieved after a long struggle.
