3 March,Kathmandu: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has insisted on the need of holding the three-tier election within the scheduled date to institutionalise the federal republic.
Inaugurating the fourth national general convention of the party-aligned Democratic Teachers’ Association, Tribhuvan University here today, the former Prime Minister said January-February were not favourable time for holding the election due to country’s geography so all the elections should be held before mid-December.
The President of the major ruling partner hoped to get support and cooperation from all quarters to make the local poll announced for upcoming May 14 successful.
“This association is an intellectual body and it is supposed to suggest its mother party ways for tackling challenges over democracy,” leader Deuba asserted, urging it hold the election for a new leadership as the election strengthened democracy.
Also speaking on the occasion, party senior Ramchandra Poudel said foreign meddling heightened in the country and the association should suggest the party a right headway to keep the national unity intact on this backdrop.
Defense Minister Balkrishna Khand insisted that university teachers should remain active for the prosperity of an academic sector and a safeguard of democracy.
Nepal Teachers’ Association President Rameshwor Upadhyay expressed concerned over the party ‘support’ in the appointments of police chief and ambassadors made on the basis of political sharing.
Association President Basudev Ghimire pledged to develop the organisations as per new federal model. A total of 1,272 representatives are taking part in the general convention to be run till Saturday.
